Ashwini Ponnappa was born in Bangalore, Karnataka, on September 18, 1989. She came from a Kodava family and was inspired by her father, M.A. Ponnappa, a national hockey player. She started playing badminton at eight and joined the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy when she was 14.

Ashwini Ponnappa made her international debut in 2006 and partnered with Jwala Gutta in women’s doubles and V. Diju in mixed doubles. She successfully partnered with Gutta as the pair became the first Indian women’s doubles pair to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
